Linux Penguin

MyLinux

Update: chilli has taken over as the home server, following in the footsteps of olddire and newdire

I've also got a Sony Vaio Picturebook off ebay to play around with!

Open Source Work

I've been involved with a number of open source projects.

LooperNG - Created a ebuild to allow easy installation on Gentoo.
Gaim-RSS-Reader - RSS plugin for the multi-protocol chat client Gaim.
Tiki - This a content management system Wiki. I run the PVR Hardware Database using it and have submitted a number of bug fixes and patches.
MythTV - Linux PVR. I'm building a PVR at the moment. Reading the mailing lists, there's alot of hardware related questions so I've submitted a script to pull a load of hardware/performance settings out of a linux system for submission when making bug reports to help with diagnosis. I have also set-up a PVR Hardware Database to help people make decisions on what kit to use/buy.
Zoph - Very good photo management system. I've so far submitted some man pages, produced RPM and DEB packages, and have a installation script in the works that automagically produces RPM/DEB/tardist files.
Nagios - Simple Network Monitoring Tool. Create a couple of very dump scripts to convert part of the configs back and forth between Nagios and Cheops-ng. This allowed the Nagios user defined status map to be easily managed in a drag and drop environment. Would be nice to modify both tools to make cheops-ng the GUI frontend for Nagios .... but, I dont have the time :(
CVS Monitor - There was a request on sourceforge for packagers for this project which provides statistics and monitoring information to CVS repositories. I provided both RPM and DEB packages, however the author doesn't seem to be accepting any more updates :(
RANCID - This is a router config management system. It periodically logs into routers and dumps the current config into CVS. I submitted code to support the Bay Networks(Nortel) routers.

Here are some notes on building GNU/Linux packages such as RPM's and deb's.

If you like any of the OSS work I have done, please consider helping me out with some of the things on my wishlists.

Linux Certification

LPIC - Linux Professional Institute ( I passed my Level 1 on 13-DEC-2002 )
RHCE - RedHat Certified Engineer

Aint It Cool!

One of the coolest things about GNU/Linux is the fact that it gets ported to just about everything ( from watches to propriatary consoles ), but the REALLY usufully part is the sheer breadth of functionality...if you can think of something you'd like GNU/Linux to do...its probably already doing it!! :) Some of the more interesting projects I've come across are linked below..

MythTV - PVR
DashPC - Multimedia In-Car DVD/CD/MP3/Radio
XBOX/Linux - Sticking it to the man ;)
