Hybrid rocket engines are a significant advance in high power rocketry and the space industry. Hybrid engines merge the best attributes of solid motors and liquid engines to create an engine that is powerful and yet very simple. With simplicity comes ease of use, safety, and of course, great bang for your buck!
Much like some liquid based engines, hybrids have the oxidiser and fuel as seperate components which are mixed to produce the required thrust. Unlike most liquid based engines, the oxidiser/fuel components are not hypergolic, meaning they will not react explosivily upon contact ( whether intended or accidental ). This is a significant safety feature which is why their use in high power/model rocketry does not require an explosives/BATF license.
